What You Will Need:
Soy wax (125 or 117 Melt Point); Candle container (best are glass or tin); Wicks (All natural are best); Oil based color (optional); Oil based fragrance (Optional); Melting pot (Crock pot with thermostat is best); Thermometer (cooking type); Stir spoon; Hot glue gun (optional); Wick centering holder; and scale to measure ounces.
Instructions:
1) Put soy wax into melting pot. Set temperature to approx. 160 degrees or monitor with thermometer to acheive no more then 160 degrees. Watch temperature carefully.
2) Pre-heat (glass) container in oven set on low or warm. Get the glass very warm...not hot. Take it out just prior to pour.
3) Center wick and stick to bottom of container with hot glue gun.
4) Turn heat off when wax is completely melted (stir until all wax melts). Add color and fragrance to wax. Note: Color should not exceed 3% by weight (Start with less and add additional color to your specification.). Fragrance should not exceed 5% by weight. (Start with less and add additional fragrance to your desired level.). Do not continue to heat after fragrance and color are added. Color and fragrance evaporate quickly while being heated. You may want to add fragrance at a lower temperature...near the pour temperature to avoid evaporation.
5) Pour wax into heated glass. Allow the wax to cool to 112 to 115 degrees and maintain that temperature during the pour. Center the wick and hold in place with the wick center holder or similar device.
6) Keep container still while cooling. Cooling may take several hours (depending on ambient temperature of cooling area). It is best to seperate containers by several inches during cooling to allow cool air to circulate.
Note: If wax cures to soft add up to 5% SBHF. If it cures to hard add up to 5% SWF. You can add polyboost or stearic.
FAQ:
1) My colors vary between pours and in certain candles. Answer: Soy wax is all natural. Color variations and surface variations are common with this wax. To help avoid surface variations allow wax to cool to 112 - 115 degrees F. before pouring.
2) Will these candles be like paraffin candles? Answer: No. These candles will be softer and will have a more natural look.
